At a Crossroads

April 5th – May 30th 2014

The exhibition entitled ‘At a crossroads’ presented a selection of paintings and drawings by the artist Catherine Young Bates exploring the theme of land use and how our relation to land has evolved over the last hundred years, most particularly the intersecting parameters of the ‘rural’ and the ‘urban.’ Her relationship with this section of the Eastern Townships developed over the course of many years as she explored the roads and byways of Stanstead County in search of inspiration. She is recognized as a leading Canadian painter who has contributed to the renewal of the landscape as subject, through a combination of her mastery of technique, her determined commitment to the land and her growing awareness toward environmental issues.
