Crazy Quilt, 1887

Crazy quilt hand-made by Winifred Buckland Channell at the age of 16. Made of silk and velvet, each piece was embroidered and skillfully hand-painted, making it one of the richest and most beautiful quilts of Quebec popular artwork. Winnie Buckland (1870-1940) was born in Barnston. She married Leonard Channell, famous journalist and founder of the Sherbrooke Daily Record Company. After her husband’s death in 1909, she became Vice-President, and then President of the company, a highly unusual position for a woman of this era. Donated by Muriel Channell Greenleaf, unknown date.
