These portraits show Harriet Hannah Colby (née Child) at 24 and her husband Charles Carroll Colby at 34. These intricate portraits combine three mediums: the photographs are taken by inventor and photographer Henry Seth Taylor, and then reworked by J. Fraser, possibly a local artist, who enhances smooth surfaces with watercolour and textured surfaces with oil painting. The end result is a hybrid object which is as much of photography as of painting, and which allows combining the precision of the first with the liveliness of the second. Donation from Helen L. Colby.
